Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) narrated that one day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the masjid. He saw a man from the Anṣār called Abū Umāmah (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu). He ﷺ asked, “What is the matter? Why are you sitting in the masjid when it is not the time for prayer?” He replied, “Never-ending worries and debts, O Messenger of Allah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then asked, “Shall I not teach you words by which, when you say them, Allah will remove your worries, and settle your debts?” He replied, “Yes of course, O Messenger of Allah.” He ﷺ said, “Say in the morning and evening [the above].” Abū Umāmah (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) said, “Then I did that, and Allah removed my worries and settled my debts.” (Abū Dāwūd 1555)

**Brief Commentary**

• We are asking the Almighty by His Greatest Name (according to many scholars): the name “**Allah**” itself which means the One who is adored and worshipped.

• We are asking Him through (also known as tawassul in Arabic) His Oneness and His Lordship: He is our Sole Master, the One who created us, provides for us and manages our affairs.

• To further reiterate Allah’s Lordship over us, we remind ourselves that He is the one who created us, so we are His slaves and must worship Him as He commands. Thus, we acknowledge our servitude to Him.

• After acknowledging Allah’s superiority over us, we move on to how we are supposed to interact with Him: trying to fulfil our pledge to Him.

• Our “**pledge**” to Allah is the pledge we made when we were taken out from the back of Ādam (ʿalayhis-salām) as Allah mentions in the Qur’ān, “And when your Lord took out the offspring from the loins of the Children of Ādam and made them bear witness about themselves, He said, ‘Am I not your Lord?’ and they replied, ‘Yes, we bear witness’ (7:172).

• Allah’s “**covenant**” to us is the one mentioned in the ḥadīth narrated by Muʿādh b. Jabal (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu), which is that Allah will not punish the person who does not associate any partners with Him (Bukhārī 7373).

• By highlighting that we will keep our pledge “**to the best of my ability**”, we acknowledge our weakness and shortcomings towards Allah, as we will never be able to worship Him and thank Him as He truly deserves.

• We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our actions as they could lead us to be punished. Similarly, we seek protection from further misguidance, as the punishment of a sin is to be deprived from doing good deeds.

• By acknowledging Allah’s blessings over us, we feel more shame to disobey Him.

• Ibn al-Qayyim (raḥimahullāh) beautifully explains this part of the du‘ā’: “The words “**I acknowledge the favours that You have bestowed upon me and I admit my sins**” combine the recognition of divine favours with the awareness of the defects of the human soul and its deeds.

The perception of **Allah’s favours** leads one to love, praise and thank Him. The awareness of **the soul’s defects** leads one to be humble, need Allah and turn to Him in repentance at every moment.

Thus, the ‘ārif (one who has attained Allah’s recognition) journeys towards Him on these two wings: awareness of his own faults and recognition of his Lord’s grace. He cannot journey without them, and if he loses one, he would be like a bird that has lost a wing.”

• All of what was mentioned so far in this duʿā’ is just a preparation for the last part, which is to ask Allah for forgiveness.

• We end this duʿā’ by saying, “**Forgive me, for none forgives sins but You**.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Your Lord, Most High, is pleased with His servant when he says: "Forgive me my sins." He knows that no one forgives sins except Him” (Abū Dāwūd).

**Action Points & Benefits**

• Though this duʿā’ is to ask Allah for forgiveness, we only do so at the end. Thus, we learn that the best way of seeking forgiveness is not to immediately ask for it, but to **precede** it with the following:

1) Acknowledging Allah’s greatness and that He alone deserves to be worshipped.

2) Acknowledging the pledge we made to Allah, which is to take Him as our Lord.

3) Having hope in the promise of Allah (i.e. the promise of admitting us into Paradise if we do not associate partners with Him).

4) Seeking refuge in Allah from the evil of our sins.

5) Acknowledging Allah’s blessings over us.

6) Acknowledging our shortcomings towards Allah (i.e. our sins and our inability to perfect acts of worship).

• This duʿā’ teaches us the **adab** of seeking forgiveness and how to approach Allah with the true humility of a servant.

• It also teaches us the mindset of a believer and in a few words, reminds us about **the bond between servant and Master**.

• It reminds us **who Allah is** and who we are; how weak we are and how Powerful He is.

• When read daily, in the morning and in the evening, it gives us a chance to **reaffirm our tawḥīd** to Him and be purified from our endless sins inshā’Allah.

• It is no surprise that the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever says this with certainty will enter Paradise. This is because whoever says it with certainty is someone who sincerely repents to Allah; and **sincere repentance guarantees Paradise**.

• If we gain the habit of reciting this duʿā’ every day, inshallah we hope that whenever we die, we will be admitted into Paradise.

• The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever says it during the day with **firm belief in it**…” Reciting these adhkār with firm belief and conviction (yaqīn) requires us to know what they mean. This is why we should learn the meaning of the adhkār and reflect on it, so that we can increase in our conviction and attain the full reward.
संक्षिप्त व्याख्या

हम अल्लाह से उसकी सबसे प्यारे नाम "अल्लाह" के वसीले से दुआ कर रहे हैं। "अल्लाह" का मतलब है — जिसकी इबादत की जाती है, जो सबसे ज़्यादा पूजनीय है।

हम अल्लाह से उसकी तौहीद (एकता) और रुबूबियत (पालनहार होने) के वसीले से मांग रहे हैं। वह हमारा एकमात्र रब है, जिसने हमें पैदा किया, रोज़ी दी और हमारे सारे काम संभालता है।

हम याद कर रहे हैं कि अल्लाह ने ही हमें पैदा किया है, इसलिए हम उसके बंदे हैं और हमें उसी की इबादत करनी चाहिए — जैसा कि उसने हुक्म दिया है।

जब हमने अल्लाह की बड़ाई को कबूल कर लिया, अब हम उस वादा की बात करते हैं जो हमने उससे किया था — यानी उसकी बंदगी का वादा।

यह वादा (pledge) वह है जब इंसानों की रुहें आदम (अलैहिस्सलाम) की नस्ल से निकाली गई थीं, और अल्लाह ने पूछा था: “क्या मैं तुम्हारा रब नहीं हूँ?” सब ने जवाब दिया: “हाँ, हम गवाही देते हैं।” (कुरआन 7:172)

जब हम कहते हैं: “जहाँ तक मेरी ताक़त है मैं वफ़ादार रहूँगा”, तो इसका मतलब है कि हम अपनी कमज़ोरियों और नाकामियों को मानते हैं। हम कभी भी अल्लाह की इबादत वैसे नहीं कर सकते जैसे उसका हक़ है।

हम अल्लाह से अपने बुरे आमाल के शर (बुराई) से पनाह मांगते हैं क्योंकि ये आमाल हमें सज़ा दिला सकते हैं। साथ ही हम और गुमराही से भी बचाव चाहते हैं।

जब हम अल्लाह की नेमतों को मानते हैं, तो हमारे अंदर यह शर्म पैदा होती है कि हम उसकी नाफ़रमानी न करें।

इब्न अल-क़य्यिम (रहिमहुल्लाह) कहते हैं: “जब इंसान अल्लाह की नेमतों को मानता है और साथ ही अपने गुनाहों को भी कबूल करता है — तो वह अल्लाह से प्यार और तौबा के साथ जुड़ता है। यह दो परों वाले परिंदे की तरह है: एक पर अपने गुनाहों का एहसास और दूसरा अल्लाह की रहमत की पहचान। इन दोनों के बिना कोई अल्लाह की तरफ़ नहीं बढ़ सकता।”

यह सारी दुआ दरअसल आख़िरी लाइन की तैयारी है — जहाँ हम अल्लाह से माफ़ी मांगते हैं।

दुआ का अंत इस तरह होता है: “मुझे माफ़ कर दे, क्योंकि तेरे अलावा कोई गुनाहों को माफ़ नहीं कर सकता।” नबी ﷺ ने फ़रमाया: “अल्लाह अपने बंदे से बहुत राज़ी होता है जब वह कहता है: ‘ऐ अल्लाह, मेरे गुनाह माफ़ कर दे।’

अमली बातें और फ़ायदे (Action Points & Benefits)

यह दुआ गुनाहों की माफ़ी मांगने के लिए है, लेकिन हम आख़िर में माफ़ी मांगते हैं। इससे हमें सिखने को मिलता है कि माफ़ी मांगने से पहले अल्लाह की तारीफ़ करना चाहिए।

दुआ से पहले 6 अहम बातें:

1. अल्लाह की बड़ाई और इबादत के लायक़ सिर्फ उसी को मानना।

2. अल्लाह से किया गया वादा याद करना।

3. अल्लाह के वादे पर यक़ीन रखना — कि अगर हम शिर्क से बचें तो जन्नत मिलेगी।

4. अपने गुनाहों से अल्लाह की पनाह मांगना।

5. अल्लाह की नेमतों को याद करना।

6. अपने गुनाहों और कमियों को मानना।

यह दुआ हमें अदब सिखाती है — कैसे अल्लाह से विनम्रता के साथ बात करें।

यह दुआ बंदे और रब के रिश्ते को याद दिलाती है — वह कितना क़ुदरतमंद है और हम कितने कमज़ोर हैं।

अगर हम यह दुआ रोज़ सुबह और शाम पढ़ें, तो यह हमारी तौहीद की ताज़ा तरीक़े से तज़दीद (नवीनीकरण) करती है और अल्लाह से तौबा में मदद करती है।

जो यह दुआ यक़ीन के साथ पढ़े, उसके लिए नबी ﷺ ने फ़रमाया — वह जन्नत में जाएगा। क्योंकि यह सच्ची तौबा की निशानी है — और सच्ची तौबा जन्नत की गारंटी है।

अगर हम रोज़ यह दुआ पढ़ने की आदत बना लें, तो इन्शा'अल्लाह जब भी मौत आए, हम जन्नत के हक़दार होंगे।

नबी ﷺ ने फ़रमाया: “जो इसे दिन में यक़ीन के साथ पढ़े…” इससे सीखते हैं कि ज़िक्र को यक़ीन और समझ के साथ पढ़ना चाहिए। इसलिए हमें ज़िक्र का मतलब समझना चाहिए ताकि हमें पूरा सवाब मिले।

Whoever says it during the day with firm belief in it and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise. And whoever says it during the night with firm belief in it and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise.” (Bukhārī 6306)

**Brief Commentary**

• In this duʿā’, we seek Allah’s forgiveness and ask Him for wellbeing. This is a very important thing to ask Allah, as the Prophet ﷺ said, “Ask Allah for forgiveness and wellbeing, for no one is given anything after certainty that is better than wellbeing” (Tirmidhī 3557).

• When seeking Allah’s forgiveness, we are asking Him to forgive our sins and also wipe them off our record of deeds.

• Wellbeing in this life includes protection from physical, mental and spiritual ailments, including sins.

• When we ask for wellbeing, we are asking Allah to save us from all trials and tribulations, to strengthen our heart and our physical state so that we meet Him free from sins.

• We ask Allah for wellbeing ‘**in this world and the next**’. This encompasses all the states that we will be in.

• Wellbeing in the next life includes protection from the punishment of the grave, terrors of the Day of Judgement, and the torments of the Hellfire.

• To strengthen our request, we repeat it again, clarifying that we want wellbeing in our **religion, our life, our family, and wealth**.

• Wellbeing in our ‘**religion**’ means to be saved from committing sins or having incorrect beliefs; and ensuring our tawḥīd of Allah is complete.

• Wellbeing in our ‘**worldly affairs**’ means to be saved from calamities and errors that cause us to be heedless of the remembrance of Allah or completing acts of worship.

• Wellbeing in our ‘**family**’ means that we are all saved from trials and evil, including being saved from having problems with each other.

• Wellbeing in our ‘**wealth**’ is protection from it being lost or stolen; and to be saved from spending it in a way that displeases Allah.

• As a supplement to asking Allah for wellbeing, we also ask Him that He conceals our faults. This includes everything we dislike for others to know about us.

• We also ask Him to calm our fears, so that we can live peacefully.

• For the final part of the duʿā’, we ask Allah to protect us from all angles. This includes the four angles that Shayṭān promised to attack us from, as Allah mentions in the Qur’ān that Shayṭān says, “And then I shall come to them from in front of them, from behind them, from their right, and from their left…” (7:17).

• In addition to these four angles that Shayṭān promised to attack us from, we also ask Allah to protect us from the remaining two angles, which are from above us and from beneath us.

• The request to be saved from beneath us is a stronger request (i.e. the addition of ‘from being unexpectedly destroyed’ instead of just ‘beneath me’; and asking through Allah’s ‘Greatness’). This could refer to being swallowed up by the earth as a punishment by Allah, just as Pharaoh and Qārūn were destroyed, and will happen to people towards the end of times. It could also refer to unexpected difficulties. Thus, we are asking Allah to protect us from committing something that deserves for us to be punished in this life by Him.

** Action Points **
• Always ask Allah for forgiveness and wellbeing as it is from the greatest gifts you can receive.

• The whole duʿā’ is all-encompassing within the first few words. However, we repeat this request and detail our requirements further so that we show insistence in our request - and this is something that Allah loves.

• We also repeat and expand on this request so that we actually ponder over what we want and therefore request it from our heart.

• Shayṭān tries to attack you from all angles so ensure you are always aware of his plots, and ask Allah to protect you from him.
इस दुआ में हम अल्लाह से माफ़ी और भलाई (आफ़ियत) की दुआ करते हैं। यह बहुत अहम दुआ है क्योंकि पैग़ंबर ﷺ ने फ़रमाया: “अल्लाह से माफ़ी और आफ़ियत मांगा करो, क्योंकि यक़ीन (ईमान) के बाद किसी को सबसे बेहतरीन चीज़ अगर मिलती है, तो वह है आफ़ियत।” (तिर्मिज़ी 3557)
• जब हम माफ़ी मांगते हैं, तो हम चाहते हैं कि अल्लाह हमारे गुनाह माफ़ कर दे और उन्हें हमारे आमालनामा (कर्मों के रिकॉर्ड) से मिटा दे।
• दुनिया में आफ़ियत का मतलब है — जिस्मानी, ज़ेहनी और रूहानी परेशानियों और गुनाहों से महफूज़ रहना।
• जब हम आफ़ियत मांगते हैं, तो हम अल्लाह से चाहते हैं कि वह हमें हर तरह की मुसीबतों, परीक्षाओं से बचाए, हमारा दिल मज़बूत करे और हमें इस तरह मौत दे कि हम गुनाहों से पाक हों।
• हम अल्लाह से "दुनिया और आख़िरत" दोनों में आफ़ियत मांगते हैं ,यानी हमारी हर हालत में भलाई हो।
• आख़िरत की आफ़ियत का मतलब है , कब्र की सज़ा, क़ियामत के डर, और जहन्नम के अज़ाब से बचाव।

• हम अपनी दुआ को और मज़बूत करने के लिए इसे दोहराते हैं और विस्तार से कहते हैं कि हमें दीन, दुनिया, घर-परिवार और माल-दौलत में भलाई चाहिए।

• दीन में आफ़ियत का मतलब है ,हमें गलत अक़ीदे या गुनाहों से बचाना और यह यकीन दिलाना कि हमारा तौहीद मुकम्मल हो।

• दुनियावी कामों में आफ़ियत का मतलब है , हमें ऐसी परेशानियों और गलतियों से बचाना जो हमें अल्लाह की याद से गाफ़िल कर दें या इबादत से रोकें।
• परिवार में आफ़ियत का मतलब है — हमें आपसी झगड़ों और बुराइयों से बचाना।
• माल में आफ़ियत का मतलब है — हमारे माल को चोरी, बर्बादी या अल्लाह की नाफ़रमानी में खर्च होने से बचाना।

• हम अल्लाह से यह दुआ भी मांगते हैं कि वह हमारी कमज़ोरियाँ और गलतियाँ छुपा ले — यानी जो बातें हम नहीं चाहते कि कोई और जाने।

• हम उससे यह भी मांगते हैं कि वह हमारे डर और घबराहट को दूर करे, ताकि हम सुकून से ज़िंदगी जी सकें।

• दुआ के आख़िरी हिस्से में हम अल्लाह से हर तरफ़ से हिफ़ाज़त की दुआ करते हैं।
यह उन चार दिशाओं को भी शामिल करता है जिनसे शैतान हम पर हमला करने का वादा करता है —
जैसा कि कुरआन में अल्लाह कहता है:

> "मैं (शैतान) उनके पास सामने से, पीछे से, दाईं ओर और बाईं ओर से आऊँगा..." (सूरह अ'राफ़ 7:17)

• हम अल्लाह से ऊपर और नीचे से भी हिफ़ाज़त मांगते हैं — क्योंकि ये दो और दिशाएं हैं जिनसे भी अचानक खतरा हो सकता है।

• "नीचे से" हिफ़ाज़त की दुआ को खास ताक़त के साथ मांगा गया है, जैसे — “तुझसे पनाह मांगता हूँ कि तू मुझे नीचे से हलाक कर दे।”
यह उस अज़ाब की तरफ इशारा हो सकता है जो ज़मीन में धँसाने वाला होता है, जैसे फ़िरऔन और क़ारून के साथ हुआ था, और जैसे क़ियामत से पहले कुछ लोगों के साथ होगा।
यह किसी भी अचानक आने वाली मुसीबत के लिए भी हो सकता है।

अमल की बातें (Action Points):

• हमेशा अल्लाह से माफ़ी और आफ़ियत की दुआ करते रहो — ये सबसे बड़ी नेमतों में से हैं।

• इस दुआ की शुरुआत में ही हर ज़रूरत शामिल है, लेकिन फिर भी इसे दोहराना और विस्तार से मांगना यह दिखाता है कि हम सच्चे दिल से मांग रहे हैं — और यह अल्लाह को पसंद है।

• जब हम अपनी बात को तफ्सील से दोहराते हैं, तो हम खुद भी सोचते हैं कि हमें क्या चाहिए — और दिल से दुआ करते हैं।

• शैतान हर तरफ से हमला करता है — इसलिए हमेशा उसकी चालों से बचने के लिए सतर्क रहो और अल्लाह से उसकी हिफ़ाज़त मांगो।
